Dear Neighbors,
We hope everyone in our community is staying warm and safe during this snowy start to February.
As we begin the new year, BCCA is entering an important period of transition. We recently said goodbye to our President, Dana Riddlemoser, and longtime Neighborhood Watch Coordinator, Mark Clarke. Both made lasting contributions to Broyhill Crest, and we are deeply grateful for the time, care, and leadership they gave our community.
With these departures, we now have a need and an opportunity for new community members to step forward, share their ideas, and help shape the future of Broyhill Crest.
A New Committee Structure for Busy Neighbors
To make involvement easier and more accessible, the BCCA Board is restructuring to include small, topic-focused committees. This new structure is designed to:
- Bring more residents into the organization
- Offer manageable, low-time-commitment roles
- Create real impact without overwhelming volunteers
Our goal is simple: make it easier for everyone to participate in a way that fits their schedule and interests.
We Need Your Help
BCCA exists because neighbors step up. Without new volunteers and active members, the strong sense of community and advocacy BCCA has built over the years cannot continue. Your involvement — whether through volunteering, paying dues, or encouraging a neighbor to join — truly makes a difference.
Community Dues
To support our programs, safety initiatives, and neighborhood events, we are also asking for voluntary annual dues.
In the past, dues were $10 per year. This year, we invite residents to contribute what they are able — $25, $50, $100, or more. Every dollar goes directly toward BCCA community activities, events, and neighborhood safety.

We’ll also be hosting a community happy hour in the coming weeks to welcome new volunteers, connect neighbors, and share more about how to get involved.
As noted above, coordinator Mark Clarke has retired from the position of Neighborhood Watch (NW) coordinator. Patrols continue as usual, but BCCA would like to have a person to oversee operations. The NW is also looking for additional patrollers. If you are interested in serving as a coordinator or a patroller, please contact yourbcca@gmail.com.
Vendor and Exhibitor Applications for 2026 Earth Day Fairfax Festival
Join us for Fairfax County’s largest Earth Day celebration!
The annual event, which draws thousands of visitors, will take place on Saturday, April 25, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Lake Fairfax Park in Reston. Applications are now being accepted for vendors and exhibitors to participate. All applications must be received by Monday, February 23, and rolling notifications of acceptance will be made through March 2. The application process for food vendors only, however, has already closed.
In the spirit of Earth Day and the Park Authority’s dedication to preserving our natural resources and encouraging positive stewardship practices, we request that all food vendors, merchandise vendors, and exhibitors plan to provide Earth-friendly utensils, handouts, and giveaways.

FROM THE FRIENDS OF HOLMES RUN
Help reclaim our park
Join us as we rescue the trees in our beloved Broyhill Crest Park from the chokehold of non-native, invasive vines. You will learn skills you can then use to save your own trees!
Friends of Holmes Run and Fairfax Tree Rescuers PRISM will lead a Tree Rescuing event on Saturday, March 21, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., at Broyhill Crest Park on the 7130 block of Murray Lane, Annandale, Virginia, 22003. Park on the street, then enter the park via the small trail on the east side of Murray Lane between Sanford Court and Early Street.
Training will be provided. Wear long sleeves/pants and sturdy shoes. Bring gloves, loppers, hand clippers, and/or small saws if you have them. Some loaner tools also will be available. Parental supervision is required for children under 12. (Rain date: Sunday, March 22).

2026 Seedling Sale
Our 2026 seedling sale features shrubs and trees that were selected for their value to wildlife throughout the year. They will also help clean our water and air, prevent soil erosion, sequester carbon, and add year-round beauty to your landscape.
Seedling packages will be made available online on the NVSWCD Storefront at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 19, 2026, and will remain available until sold out.
The seedling sale pickup will be Friday, March 27, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Saturday, March 28, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Sleepy Hollow Bath and Racquet Club, 3516 Sleepy Hollow Road, Falls Church, VA 22044.
We rolled out a new sales website last year: the NVSWCD Storefront. If you made an account last year, you will use the same one to login this year. If you have not made an account yet, you can do so at https://nvswcdevents.myrec.com/info/default.aspx.
2026 Seedling Packages
The Pick of the Patch package features 4 seedlings for $20. These include 2 Common Pawpaw and 2 American Plum.
The Berry Bonanza package features 4 seedlings for $20. These include 2 Canadian Serviceberry and 2 American Elderberry.
We will have a limited number of build-your-own tumbling composter kits and pre-made rain barrels for sale. You’ll also be able to add a Native Plants for Northern Virginia guide to your order at checkout.

Please join us for the 2nd Annual Mason District Health Fair. The Health Fair will take place at the James Lee Community Center on Saturday, February 7th, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Services will include, but are not limited to:
- Vaccine appointment registration and information
- Medicaid enrollment assistance
- Hearing and vision screenings
- Substance abuse prevention training and resources
This event represents an opportunity to showcase our county’s growing array of resources and ensure our residents have access to the services that keep them safe and healthy.
Fairfax County’s Office to Prevent and End Homelessness is leading a communitywide planning effort to improve how we prevent and respond to homelessness across Fairfax County, Fairfax City, and the City of Falls Church.
The goal is to identify clear priorities and make informed decisions about programs, policies, and funding—helping reduce how often people experience homelessness and how long it lasts.
The Fairfax County Continuum of Care wants to hear from you. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey and help inform the County’s next Strategic Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness.
In a year of frequent elections, our goal is to create a conversation around voting accessibility and ensure that all residents, especially residents living with disabilities, have an equal opportunity to cast their ballots.
This anonymous survey seeks to gather feedback on what worked well and what was challenging during this year’s elections. Your input will help inform improvements and strengthen voting access in Mason District for future elections.
Do you have a creative spark—or know a student who does? Join the first-ever Solid Waste Management Glass Recycling Can Art Contest, in partnership with the Mason District Arts Advisory Council! This contest invites students to create artwork that highlights the benefits and importance of glass recycling.
Eligibility:
- Students in 6th–12th grade
- Must attend a Justice HS, Annandale HS, or Falls Church HS pyramid school in Mason District
Contest Details:
- Submit one original artwork per entry
- Can enter individually or as a group
- Theme: “The benefits and importance of glass recycling for our community”
Prizes & Recognition:
- Winning artwork will be installed on a purple glass recycling can at the Mason District Government Center
- Artwork will debut on Earth Day, April 2026
- Winners will be notified in March 2026
